母との確執が深かった石内都。彼女は母の旧姓「石内都」を名乗り写真家として活動をしてきた。代表作「Mother's」はその母の遺品と石内が対峙し、ひとつひとつをポートレートのように切り取っていったシリーズ。指紋や細かな傷の付いた使いかけの口紅、つま先が痛み薄汚れた靴、黄ばみかかった入れ歯、髪の毛が絡まったままのヘアブラシ…生前母とうまくコミュニケーションが取れずに悩んでいた石内は母と改めて対話するようにそれらと向き合った。「ひろしま」は広島平和記念資料館に収蔵されている被爆者の遺品と対峙している。「贅沢は敵」とされていた当時、それでもおしゃれ心を大切にしていた少女のワンピース、美しい花柄のスカート、チェックのワンピース、メガネ、黒焦げたブリキのお弁当箱、血で染められたブラウスなど…石内は肌身に触れるものを中心にそれらと10年以上向き合い続けている。 「フリーダ・カーロ」は彼女が所持していた美しい民族衣装、タバコ、香水瓶、アクセサリー、サングラス、マニキュア瓶、赤いブーツを履いた義足、描かれたコルセットなどの遺品と対峙している。世の中に植え付けられたフリーダの劇的な人生を中心としたステレオタイプを拭い、フリーダ・カーロという一人の女性そのものを浮かび上がらせている。 「Belongings / 遺されたもの」は「遺品」をテーマとして共通するこれら「Mother’s」、「ひろしま」、「フリーダ・カーロ」の3シリーズを収録している。

Miyako Ishiuchi has suffered for a long time from the difficulty in communicating with her mother. She has kept her activity with her mother’s maiden name, “Miyako Ishiuchi,” and her representative work “Mother’s” features belongings of her deceased mother, with each photo capturing mother’s belonging just like a portrait. Fingerprinted and scratched half-used lipsticks, damaged and stained shoes, yellowish dentures and a comb with some hair in it... Ishiuchi faced items of deceased as if communicating with her mother. “Hiroshima” faces belongings of atomic-bomb victims, which are stored in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Dresses cherished by girls amidst the war, when people called temperance, saying such as “indulgence in luxuries is our enemy,” a beautiful flower-patterned skirt, glasses, a burnt tin lunch box and blood-stained blouses... She has kept facing these victim’s belongings for over 10 years. “Frida Kahlo” faces personal items, which were belonged to Frida Kahlo. Ishiuchi confronted various belongings such as exquisite ethnic dresses, cigarettes, perfume bottles, accessories, sunglasses, manicure bottles, prosthetic legs with red boots and a painted corset. The work shows a genuine portrait of a woman, without a public stereotype for the artist. The photo book “Belongings” contains three series of “Mother’s,” “Hiroshima” and “Frida Kahlo,” each faces memorable belongings of people.
